SLUG opening ceremony at EUSL main ground

 

Eastern University Shines as Host of Spectacular Mini Olympics

The Eastern University, Sri Lanka takes pride in hosting the distinguished 14th Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG). The SLUG is a highly anticipated event held every three years in rotation among Sri Lankan State Universities, bringing together athletes from all over the country. Hosting this event is a unique opportunity for the Eastern university and the entire Island to promote sports development and a peaceful society. 

A major event of this, the opening ceremony for the finals, is held at the main playground of the Eastern University, Sri Lanka to much acclaim. The historic opening ceremony event commenced at 2.00 p.m. and was graced by the presence of Professor V. Kanagasingam, who presided over the ceremony. The chief guest for the event was Senior Professor Chandana P. Udawatte, Vice Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka. Distinguished Vice-Chancellors from other state universities, members of the Eastern University Council, the District Secretary, the District Inspector General of Police and Directors of Physical Education Departments from various state universities were among the esteemed guests who attended the event. 

Notably, Eastern University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor K. E. Karunakaran, also took part in the event, as did Professor N. Rajeshwaran, President of the Sri Lanka Universities Sports Association and Vice Chairman for the 14th Sri Lanka University Games for the year 2023. Mr. A. Pahirathan, the University Registrar, M. S. Thibakaran, Secretary and Organizing Committee for the 14th Sri Lanka University Games for the year 2023 and the Director of the Physical Education Unit of the Eastern University, Sri Lanka and other key figures were present. 

The audience was further enriched by the presence of Directors, Deans, Heads of Departments, Senior Professors, Professors, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers, Senior Assistant Registrars, Assistant Registrars, non-academic staff, students, and well-wishers. The chief guest was honoured by A parade featuring school students’ band performances and a procession of athletes from state universities added to the grandeur of the event.

Adding a cultural touch to the ceremony, students from Swami Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies of the Eastern University, Sri Lanka performed a welcome dance and cultural dances, further elevating the event's significance. The white doves attracted everyone's attention when they flew symbolizing unity for societal development, global sports industry growth, and promoting peace within the country.
