The Eastern University (EUSL), Sri Lanka with twenty-nine years old University tradition in the Eastern Province was preceded by the establishment of Batticaloa University College on 1st August, 1981 in Vantharumoolai with two Faculties Viz. the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Agriculture having 80 students on roll. At present, Eastern University, Sri Lanka has stretched out its arm from Batticaloa to Trincomalee and proudly stands as the largest Higher Educational Institution in the Eastern Province consisting of five Faculties and One Institute in Batticaloa District, and One Campus in Trincomalee District with 6344 students on roll. The Senate Block of the Eastern University, Sri Lanka is located at the Main Campus in Vantharumoolai which is 15 km away from Batticaloa town. Four Faculties, Viz. Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Commerce and Management and Faculty of Arts and Culture are housed in the main campus. Faculty of Health – Care Sciences is situated 15 km away from Vantharumoolai in Batticaloa town. Swamy Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies affiliated to the University, is situated 3km away from the Faculty of Health – Care Sciences in Nochchimunai which is offering BFA in Music, Dance, Drama & Theatre Arts and Visual & Technological Arts. Trincomalee Campus of the University is located 180 km away from the Vantharumoolai at Konesapuri in Trincomalee District having two Faculties and one Unit Viz. Faculty of Communication and Business Studies, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Unit of Siddha Medicine.

As far as the admission of the physically challenged is concerned only the Faculty of Arts & Culture admits such nature of students annually and around 5-8 students admitted to the faculty. The university and the faculty so far strives its level best to facilitate the learning and teaching modalities to such nature of students but due to state funding constraints at present the limited access has been extended to the physically challenge students.

The prime objective of the University is to promote research activities among the staff and the students, and providing quality oriented teaching to the students and then provide employable graduates both locally and globally. Apart from these the university also actively committed in engaging community outreach activities which further ensure the University community relationship which indeed a vital component to empower the society in various aspects as well.
